TUT entrepreneurship students to benefit from Finland programme


Collaboration aimed at empowering TUT students to start new businesses.

A new skills programme wants to encourage Tshwane University of Techology students to start their own businesses.

This new skills programme, developed along with a university from Finland, is aimed at developing participants’ entrepreneurial skills.

The programme will enhance TUT’s existing entrepreneurship course.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) entrepreneurship students education will be enhanced by a new skills programme.

The programme is among the first of its kind in Finland, where it was developed by that country’s

Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences (Haaga-Helia University UAS).

The collaboration will include, among other things, the development of education, learn startup know-how, coaching skills training as well as research and development projects, said TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter.

A centre for entrepreneurial development based on Haaga-Helia UAS and its StartUp School incubator will also be created at TUT.

The first modules of the co-operation will start in June 2018, both in Finland and in South Africa, said the university.

Haaga-Helia UAS will support TUT in developing the new study programme.

The programme is expected to launch in 2020.

Other areas of co-operation will include lean startup expertise, coaching skills training, programmes for collaboration between companies and the university as well as Research and Development

Founded in 2012, the StartUp School helps Haaga-Helia UAS students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and start their own businesses.

The collaboration between both universities is targeted at empowering TUT students to start new businesses, said TUT professor Stanley Mukhola.

“In this way, they can become employers in South Africa who in turn can assist in eradicating the high unemployment rates in the country,” he said.
