Best of Africa Awards: All you need to know about the BOA

Find out more about the Best of Africa Awards ceremony that takes place on April 30 in London and is hosted by comedian Eddie Kadi

Now into its eighth year, the Best of Africa Awards ceremony is a celebration of Africa’s key philanthropic contributors and brings together the primary figures who support ethical socio-economic development causes across the continent.

The BOA were founded in 2011, and return this year with the winners of various categories set to be announced at an awards ceremony in London on April 30.

The event will be hosted by British-Congolese comedian Eddie Kadi, with Amina J. Mohammed - the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations - delivering a keynote speech.

In previous years, the annual BOA dinner has been a remarkable success and has succeeded in recognising and drawing attention to the modern African story through sectors other than sport and in territories beyond the UK.

This year’s event has been organised by Polaris Media, Mishcon de Reya and Rainbow Sports.

The ceremony is a chance to celebrate Africa’s most illustrious contributions in professional sport and media, and the dinner later this month will again honour the continent’s leaders in various key categories.

The Baobab Award celebrates the organisation or project which has demonstrated the greatest impact in the preceding year, while there are also Philanthropic Endeavour awards to celebrate Leadership, Advocacy, Youth Engagement and Community Action.

These latter four awards are given to professional athletes whose work has set them apart in each of the categories.

The winners of each category will be decided by a voting panel containing representatives from the Premier League, the Football Association and The Guardian.

In the past, the event has been attended by African football luminaries such as Yaya Toure, Andre Ayew, Emmanuel Adebayor and Asamoah Gyan.

Last year, leading African entrepreneur and philanthropist Tsitsi Masiyiwa delivered the keynote speech at an event which was attended by Victor Wanyama, Saido Berahino and Lauren, among many other big names from the continent’s sporting scene.
