Learners benefit from maths programmes

NEWS24 / 24 MAY 2018 - 06.00

In a bid to sharpen children’s involvement in maths, the Grand West has partnered with African Institute for Mathematical Sciences School Enrichment Centre (Aimssec) to help Langa’s Khulani High School learners.

Heidi Edson said: “GrandWest has facilitated a project where Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners from this school are tutored by Aimssec master’s students every weekend for 14 weeks,”.

Heidi Edson (the Group Socio Economic Development Specialist at Sun International), Simnikiwe Hlalukana (learner), Mervyn Naidoo (GM, GrandWest), Hlomla Mvimbi (learner).

Edson is the group socio-economic development specialist at Sun International.

“We are covering the tutoring costs as well as providing refreshments to the learners,” she said.

“We invited Aimssec and linked them to the high school. We then facilitated the meeting where the timetable and the programme were formulated and going forward, we will manage and oversee the programme to ensure that learning takes place every Saturday,” she added.

“We are delighted that 128 learners have enrolled to be tutored and Aimssec has committed to bringing five tutors and a coordinator every week,” said Edson.

The company became involved in maths intervention in 2016 when they first collaborated with Aimssec in a project to tutor Grade 11 and 12 learners from ID. Mkize Senior Secondary School and Gugulethu Comprehensive schools.

“The intervention seemed to have been effective as large numbers of the students who participated are pursuing higher education studies,” said Edson.

“Aimssec are perfect partners as they are already involved in facilitating programmes to teachers and learners in under-resourced schools to improve the quality of teaching and learning mathematics,” she said.

She added: “After the success this programme showed in 2016 we are very hopeful that we will be able to make a difference to learners’ matric maths results this year.”
