WEEKLY TFM ARTICLES steps up again to inspire start-ups with Primestars in 2018


South Africa’s low-cost carrier, is proud to announce that it has for a fifth year in a row partnered with Primestars to launch their Step Up to a Start-Up campaign for 2018, together with South Africa’s Minister of Small Business Development and American businessman and author, Robert Kiyosaki.

To date, Step Up 2 A Start Up has reached nearly 65,000 learners nationwide and in 2018 the entrepreneurship programme will once again be aimed at learners in grades 9 – 11 with this year’s theme being, ‘Think Tech. Do Business.’, which will focus on finding technological solutions for the many every day hurdles that we face in South Africa.

The programme offers students the opportunity to explore their entrepreneurial soul through creative learning and thinking by challenging them to come up with solutions for a modern South Africa. “This is synonymous with our kulula brand promise. kulula was created with the aim to find a solution that would make travel accessible to all and as a brand we realise the importance to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs so that they can bring hope to the many challenges that we face daily.”

From the 18th of August to the 8th of September 2018, learners will begin their journey into the world of entrepreneurship presented in an 80-minute feature-film titled ‘iKusasa Lethu (translated as Our Future)’, which will be screened at 14-cinemas nationwide. Each movie has an entrepreneurial theme forming an enterprise around an idea or problem, and the movie ends when a customer commits to using the product or service.

As part of the programme, each learner will receive a toolkit, which will assist them in implementing the skills learnt and developing their own business ideas and models. Learners will be given the opportunity to compete in an entrepreneurial competition by submitting their business model canvasses for assessment and adjudication by a panel of industry professionals and sponsors.

During this process, at least nine top business models will be identified and the teams responsible will be invited to attend a boot camp with some of South Africa’s best business brains in Johannesburg and proudly flown by This will hone and polish participants’ skills, as they start to think more about developing and starting their businesses based on the ideas they submitted. The programme will culminate in a prestigious gala dinner and awards ceremony where the winners will be announced.
