The current furore over the proposed mining charter should be seen as a wake-up call to craft a genuinely transformed mining industry based on the kind of public and stakeholder participation envisaged in the Constitution, says Vanessa Jacklin-Levin, Of Counsel at Dentons South Africa.

“As we all know, the mining industry was the foundation of the industrial development of the country, but also a major player in the creation of an unjust socio-economic order. The industry can only build on that legacy by creating a mining industry that genuinely provides leadership in empowering the previously disadvantaged,” says Jacklin-Levin.
