Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) joined in the Enterprise Development Business Expo hosted by De Beers in the Kimberley City Hall on Thursday (24/05).

The Enterprise Development Business Expo was launched to empower young entrepreneurs in the Kimberley Region through exposure and mentoring by established organisations.

The Zimele Community Fund was launched in October 1998.

The aim is to aid enterprise development, employment creation and poverty alleviation in the areas where De Beers operates through business hubs in Kimberley, Musina, Kroonstad and Kleinzee.

In Kimberley, the De Beers Zimele Hub has been funding commercially viable SMEs through empowerment opportunities for previously disadvantaged South Africans since 2009 – offering a significant contribution to economic development in the region.

“The De Beers Zimele Hub is an initiative that has been established in partnership with Anglo Zimele.

“This is to develop and nurture commercially viable businesses, while bringing about sustainable black economic empowerment through the creation of small and medium enterprises,” said Tumelo Mokwena, Zimele Hub manager.

The full-day expo included presentations and exhibitions by different stakeholders.

Zimele’s presentation focused on its financial and non-financial programme offerings and the requirements that prospective businesses must meet before applying for assistance.

The exhibition gave a platform for its successful beneficiaries to showcase their businesses and share what they had learnt with up-and-coming SMEs.

Instrumental to the success of the Kimberley Hub has been the mentorship and coaching programme.

Available for the businesses that Zimele supports, are mentorship services such as baseline assessments or gap analysis, business advisory services, referrals and business skills training.
