ETHEKWINI Municipality has given the green light to the formation of a Go!Durban Legacy Fund and Programme which will use the more than R30-million contributed by different businesses who have been or are involved in the delivery of the Go!Durban Programme, for youth development.

All existing and future contributions for social investment and skills development, flowing from requirements in the Go!Durban Empowerment Charter and the Go!Durban Radical Economic Transformation Specification, will be deposited in the Legacy Fund. The project was outlined in a report tabled at a recent Executive Committee meeting.

The report stated strategic objectives of the proposed Go!Durban Legacy Fund and Programme, including its provision as a platform for all service providers involved in the delivery of the Go!Durban Programme to contribute to socio-economic development programmes of the City in the form of corporate social investment.

Other objectives include youth development and empowerment, fostering innovation and creativity in young people, preparation of young people to be nation builders, and facilitating social cohesion.

The key focal areas of the programme include supporting talent in sport especially cycling, recognising creative arts and supporting initiatives in communities aimed at youth development.

The report stated that a sum of R30 477 324 has been contributed by business entities and it was now necessary that an appropriate legal vehicle be agreed on by the City and the contributing business entities, so that the contributed funds can be utilised.

Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Mondli Mthembu said the project will assist in empowering young people in the City. He stressed the importance of young people living around the corridors of the Go!Durban project, benefiting from the programme.

“It must be correctly implemented to ensure a high amount of beneficiaries especially from the affected areas along the corridors of the Go!Durban project,” he said.
